Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of idioms in the context of business situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and deduction listening practice using audio text about idioms in the context of business.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will use the cartoon drawing on page 68 to illicit the context from the students and clarify the meaning of idioms. 2-3 mins Ask the students if they know of any similar idioms in their own Turkish. 1-2 mins

Exposure: A (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

The students will be asked to work through exercise A individually: 3 mins Then the class will work in a group to discuss their answers: 4 mins Then I will clarify any issues regarding meanings of the idioms. 3 mins

Useful Language: B (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language with audio listening task

The students will listen to audio track and check their answers to match the correct idiom. 3-4 mins Will provide clarification of context and meaning of idioms: 2-3 mins

Productive Tasks: C, D and E (13-18 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Task C: The students will individually work on task C, creating two lists, negative and positive for the idioms in exercise A. 1-2 mins The students will then work as a group and decide which is their definitive list, they will write this on whiteboard. 2-3 mins Task D: The students will work in a group and will match the idioms to the correct meaning. 4-5 mins Task E: Have the students work in a group and work through exercise E. 4-5 mins Ask the students to talk about situations similar to 3a, b, c and d. 2-3 mins

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Use this time to clarify any issues from the previous exercises. 4-5 mins If the use of idioms is clear then introduce the practice file exercises from Unit 7 and ask students to start them: (Make 3 copies for students). If there is no time start or finish them, ask students to do these as homework. 4-5 mins
