Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students learn about compound words through guided discovery based on a reading text about the disadvantages of machines. The lesson starts with a discussion about modern technology and their merits and demerits. This is followed by a gist reading task where students read and match the headings withe the paragraphs. Then ss do a detailed reading task where they have to read carefully to answer some questions. Finally, there is some semi-controlled practice through discussing the writer attitudes and opinions.

Main Aims

  • To practice Reading for general understanding and details in the context of machines and technology.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice semi-controlled speaking using the vocabulary of technology.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start with a question, 'Which things can't you live without? The answers may vary of course. Some ss may say water, food ...etc. Extend the question by adding ' in the modern time' . Guide ss to give the right answers like: mobiles, computers, Tv ..... etc. Elicit more from the students by asking them why they think so. Accept all their answers.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Use short stories, miming, definitions and CCQs to introduce the new vocabulary. Highlight the stress in the compound words and model it. Then drill the vocabulary with them.

Reading task 1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist reading.

Before students start the detailed reading. give them a gist reading task. Ask them to match the headings with the paragraphs. Now demonstrate what are they going to do . Give them time to read and guess the answers.

Reading task2 (9-11 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Give ss time to look through the questions in Ex 5. Ask ss to read the text again for 5 minutes. After that ss are asked to work in pairs to answer these questions according to the writer's point of view. Ss change their pairs and check the answers.

Follow up (12-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put ss into groups of four to discuss the questions in ex 7a . Give them time to carry out the discussion by themselves. Monitor while they are working. Get feed back by asking them to change their group and find out if the other groups agree with them or not.
