Subsidiary Aims

  • Improving useful language for claiming complaints in a formal way.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show some pictures which include people who are complaining the conditions in a hotel and I will tell a story about the time that my friend and I went to a hotel and the problems that we had there. I will have them discuss for a minute. So that I will elicit the word complaint and I will use CCQs such as Are they just chatting? in order to elicit the context.

Preparing to write (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to prepare for the task / To provide an opportunity to organize their ideas logically and take notes

I will give them 2 complaint letters including one written badly and one written well. I will ask them to read both letters and answer the questions that I will give and check answers with the partner. So that they will learn how to create a proper layout and how to write a good complaint letter. They will see what they should and shouldn't do when writing a letter of complaint.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will write the phrases on the board and clarify useful language by doing MFP. I will use my CCQs to clarify meaning first. For example ; I am writing in order to complain about .… ccq : Are we telling the reason or are we talking about the result ? I will tell them to check their text and look at the phrases for their using in the sentences and I will clarify the form by asking them if a noun or clause follows the phrase. I will do pronunciation by putting dots on the stressed syllables.

Writing task (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice writing skills

I will ask the students to write a complaint letter related to their experiences individually and I will ask them to use the useful language as much as they can.The task is going to be freer activity. They will be able to write a complaint to wherever they want. It can be for a hotel, for some company where they bought something and didn't like it. After they finish writing they will swop the papers with their peers and check what they did. They will change their partner and do the same. If they have more time, they will be given the activity including putting the sentences in an order. So that I will be able to make sure if they understand the useful language.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will take notes while the students were talking and I will do error correction on the board.
