Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced to a text about longevity and the lifestyle that can help people to live longer.The context is about the life of a Japanese woman who managed to stay fit and strong at 102 years old.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Lifestyle and longevity .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice on new vocabularies from the context .Also, In the post reading phase students will practice writing and speaking skills .

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T shows photos on the WB of two different types of lifestyles, two different kinds of food and a photo of a man. -T gives students 2 minutes to discuss in pairs what the pictures are about. -T points to each picture and Ss to give their opinions.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T uses the same pictures to elicit lexical items. diet-calories-protein-vitamin-junk-healthy-slim-fit-centenarians. -T asks CCQs to make sure there are no blocking vocabularies.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

-T chests the text and asks students to skim it and choose the best title. ' the article about a woman lives in Japan and her lifestyle. .I need you to read the passage quickly and find the best title relevant to the passage.' -T to HO 3 titles and give Ss 3 mins to quickly read the article and choose one. ICQs: Are we going to read quickly or slowly?(quickly) How many minutes are you going to read?(3) -Ss to check their answers in pairs. -T reveals the text title on WB.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

-T asks them to hide the article and HO a paper with 6 numbers.(120,80%,70,7am,30 minutes,7 ) give Ss a minute to read and think what it might be about. - Ss will scan the text and try to find what the numbers are about. - Ss write down the answers in 4 minutes, then PC. - T shows the answers and asks students to discuss and if they agree or not. ICQ: So are we going to read the whole text or just find the numbers? (the numbers ) How many minutes do you have?(5 min)

While-Reading/Listening #3 (5-7 minutes) • Read in depth

-T chest HO and ask students individually to answer 5 True or False questions.Also, Ss have to give a reason for false answers : 1-They eat seven servings of fruit and vegetables every day.(T) 2-Pople of Okinawa manage to stay slim by eating a high-calorie diet .(F) 3-Chiako goes to walk for an hour every day.(F) 4-Chiako doesn't go to the beach because she is always working .(F) 5-If you have good friends, a healthy diet and stress-free life, you will live longer .(T) ICQ: Are you going to answer alone or in pairs? How many minutes you have ?(3 mins) -Ss check in pairs. -Ss to put answers on WB and T shows the answer key. -T asks Ss to correct the wrong answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-T divides Ss into two groups. -One group writes tips and things that help us to live healthy and longer. and the other group writes about things not helping us to live longer. ICQ: Are you going to talk or to write?(write) How many minutes you will need ?(5 minutes) -Then each group check their ideas and prepare their sentences(3 sentences each ).(2 minutes) -Students to stand up and choose one partner from the other group and start to advise each other. -T to closely monitor and highlight any error for further error corrections.
