Description

In this lesson, students will get a chance to practice reading skill and then follow this by a writing skill task

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide a skimming then a detailed reading practice using a text about children health in the context of daily life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of a e-mail in the context of children risky play

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To get the SS engaged in the topic I would ask Students "Did you make risky things when you were children?" thus creating a link between the text and the topic of the lesson to come. The teacher would write this question on the w/b and get students to discuss the question in pairs. Then, each pair would share their experience.Each pair (or if the group is big then only some of the pairs) will share their opinions and their quick discussion about the question with the class. - "Can you please share with the class Do you think childern should take risks. Teacher should try and create a quick group discussion so that everyone is involved

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

This would be activity 2. In this activity, Teacher will elicit some vocabulary words that might be difficult to grasp.For example, sedentary,obesity,chronic,disorder,etc.The teacher will teach these words using situational examples.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Activity 3 - Prediction Task of the reading text In this activity students will look at the headline and the picture of the text. The teacher will ask students two gist questions. 1- What is the general idea of the text? 2-Is this topic about children or adults? Students will read the text in 90 seconds to get the answer s fast form the text.This is followed by a short feedback from students' own words.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

ctivity 4- Comprehension questions. Students will have to read the text/ Reading in more detail and answer the questions . Give Students the instructions for the activity and then students the handout with the questions (Activity 4) -" You will now read the text and answer these questions (Showing the handout with questions) 2) Read the questions and make sure the students understand. " Now before reading the text, Look at the questions and see if there is anything you do not understand about the questions" - "After answering any questions if there is tell SS " Now read the text and answer the questions" -Monitor students doing the activity and help students if they have not understood something. Help when necessary 3) Bring the class back together and ask SS to share the answers with the class. - As students answer. Approve it is the correct answer first before writing the answer on the W/B. - If the answer is incorrect or not relevant ask another SS to give their answer to the question 4) Feedback Reading for detail questions: 1- Why is taking risks important for children? 2-What's the writer's balanced view of risk? 3-What's your opinion about the writer's solution?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The last activity will be that of writing. The teacher will divide students into groups to practice guided writing activity. Groups will discuss how they will respond to the authors' view and then they will write the email text. Then, they will be asked to regroup to see each others' views and responses, discuss how their answers are logical.After that, the teacher will correct some mistakes in their writing in general.
