In this lesson ss learn about the difference between Present Perfect and Past Simple.The ss learn that Present perfect is an action started in the past and continued to the present, and the past simple is an action started and finished in the past. they also learn time expressions with the past and the present perfect.By the end of the lesson they will be able to use the tow different tenses correctly.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and comparison between the use of present perfect and past simple tenses , explanation for some time expressions which come with the tow tenses within a reading text

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about ambitions and Dreams in the context of Old school friends to define different verb forms and time expressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

First, i show ss 2 pictures about any famous person or Cairo city and ask them ' Have you ever seen a famous person? or ' Have you ever been to Cairo ?' When a student answers with yes,i have seen ........" , or "yes I have been to Cairo ", I ask another question in the past simple ' When did you see him/her?" or "When did you visit Cairo?' I receive their answers , chose 2 sentences , and write them on the board to discuss them with the student.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

After discussing the tow sentences with the ss to differentiate between the tow tenses , they complete 8 sentences with the correct tense , either the present perfect or the past simple.

Highlighting (8-10 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

the ss practice tow additional exercises in which they can change the form of the verb to the correct tense , and they also underline some time expressions in the tow texts used with the tow tenses

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The T reviews the forms of the verbs used in the tow previous exercises and the time expressions with each tense , then explains when to use these expressions with each tense

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

in this exercise , the students put the words into the correct order to demonstrate that they can use the present perfect correctly
