Description

In this lesson SS are going to practice their speaking skills in the context of films. Potentially new vocabulary relevant to topic will be pre taught. During the lesson, controlled listening activities will be provided as well. The Last speaking activity is freer than the others.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in Conversations in the context of film

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about film conversations in the context of film
  • To provide clarification and practice of film types in the context of film

Procedure

Lead-in (1 minutes) • to introduce the subject of films to SS

Show SS a picture of mixed films, and elicit the subject by introducing cinema as a kind of art, asking "What can you see in the picture?"

Warm up (1-2 minutes) • to provide a speaking practice to engage SS and to elicit some vocabs for the next activity

T asks SS to talk about the kinds of film they like . T monitors to know which vocabulary should be focused on in the next activity.

Vocabulary (4-5 minutes) • to provide SS with vocabulary about types of film

T shows SS the HO Give instructions "in pairs, match the pictures with the words in 2 minutes" ICQs: Are we working alone or with a partner? Are we matching or writing? T monitors to know which words to focus on Check: in groups then WC feedback While WC feedback T uses some more examples of other films for the problematic words and some CQ then uses some drilling.

Controlled Speaking (8-10 minutes) • to provide speaking practice about films they saw.

T gives instructions "walk around the room find someone who saw a film from the list and ask "Did you like it? Why?"" T makes a demonstration of the activity with a student. T monitors for a late error correction. Feedback: SS tell who saw which film and why they did/didn't like it. Error correction.

Gist Listening (3-4 minutes) • To provide SS with listening for gist practice in the context of conversations about films

T sets the context "Three conversations about films and four possible situations" T gives instructions "Listen and match the situations to the conversations ALONE. There is an extra one" T checks instructions: -Are we working alone or in pairs? -Are we matching or writing? -Are we using all the situations? SS listen to the tape-script Feedback: in pairs then WC with asking "How did you know?"

Detailed Listening (4-5 minutes) • To provide SS with listening for details practice in the context of conversations about films

T sets the context "Questions about the text" T gives instructions "Listen and answer the Qs ALONE." T checks instructions: -Are we working alone or in pairs? -Are we matching or writing? SS listen to the tape-script Feedback: in pairs then WC with asking "How did you know?"

Language Focus (3-4 minutes) • To provide SS with intonation practice for agreeing and disagreeing

T gives instructions "Read and mark A for Agreeing, D for Disagreeing or I for in between" SS listen to the tape-script to check Feedback: in pairs then WC drilling

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide SS with freer speaking practice by exchanging opinions about film and music

T gives SS instructions to prepare for the activity "fill the table (taken from CB) with your own choices." T organises SS in two circles to explain the activity -inner circle stands still, outer circle moves right on the clap every 1 min. -SS will talk about their choices with a different person each time. T checks instructions: -Who will move? -Left or Right? -Will you talk about the same thing or the next in your tables? T monitors silently to collect some mistakes for a late error correction feedback.

Feedback (5 minutes) • To provide SS with feedback about their language and check the understanding of the lesson aims

T gives some examples from SS mistakes and does a late error correction.
