Description

In this lesson, Ss will be reading a text about lottery winners and losers. First the Ss will be look at vocabulary related to the reading and then do a reading for general understanding followed by specific information and detailed understanding and finally Ss will do a follow up activity that includes idioms related to the lottery.

  • To provide clarification and practice of idioms in the context of taking risks

Procedure

Getting to know you (5 minutes) • To learn Ss` names

T asks Ss to write their names on a piece of paper. T models dialogue: A. Hello. B: Hi A: Is your name.. (Look at name on paper).. Ali? B: No, it isn't. A: Oh. OR B: Yes it is. A: Here you are (gives paper with name on it). T gives out papers randomly. Asks Ss to"Find this person" Ss asks eachother questions till they find the person. When the person has been found they sit down. When all have sat down, T asks Ss to put their names in from of them,

Lead-in (10 minutes) • To raise Ss interest in the topic of the lesson and clarify and review vocabulary

T shows words (HO1) to Ss and tells them they are going to look at the words in pairs and talk about the meaning of the words to eachother. T puts Ss in pairs and hands out the words Ss discuss the meanings in pairs. T asks Ss if there are any words they do not understand in open class feedback. T helps with meaning accordingly. e.g. if they have a problem with the word charity, T will show pics of famous charities. T drills pronunciation. T then tells Ss that some of these words are from a reading text. T asks Ss in pairs again to discuss what they think the text is about. Ss discuss in pairs and then share ideas with class.

Reading for general understanding (6-8 minutes) • To get a general understanding of the text

T asks Ss to quickly read the text to see if their ideas from the lead in were right.T hands out HO2. Ss quickly read text and check. T then asks Ss to discuss with a partner what the text is about, Ss discuss then T asks Ss to share ideas.

Reading for specific information (5-8 minutes) • To get a general understanding of the text

T shows Ss HO3. T asks Ss to scan the text and find what the numbers on the HO refer to in the text, T hands out HO2 and Ss scan text for answers. Ss check with a partner. T projects answers on wb and asks Ss to match the numbers with what they relate to.

Reading for detailed understanding (5-8 minutes) • To get a detailed understanding of the text

T points to Ex4 and tells Ss that they are going to read the text and put the phrases in the correct gap. T hands out HO4. Ss complete exercise and then check with a partner. T projects text on board and asks early finishers to write the corresponding letter in the blank onto the board.

Follow-up activity (5-8 minutes) • To clarify and review some of the phrases Ss came across in the text

T draws Ss' attention to Ex1. And asks Ss to read the sentences and match the phrases with their definitions. Ss match phrases and check with a partner. T asks Ss to come to the wb and match the phrases to their definitions. T clarifies any difficulties.

Production (10 minutes) • To give Ss the opportunity to do free practice on the theme they have read about.

If time is left over, T will ask Ss to discuss the lottery in their own country in groups. "Do they play the lottery?" "Do they think it is a good thing or bad thing?" "Does the lottery in Turkey help Turkey's economy?" etc. Ss discuss in groups. T monitors noting any errors. T asks groups to share ideas. T then writes any errors on board and gets Ss to correct errors.
