Description

In this lesson, students practice using the past simple tense through guided discovery based on a reading text about football. The lesson starts with a short vidoe about the Champions League and a short talk about it as a warmer. This is followed by reading avtivities to prepare the Ss to the production stage. Finally, Ss write a story based on the reading passage.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss watch a short video clip about the Champions League (39 seconds) and they tell what it is about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdSOEy80az0 1 - T 'Please watch this short video clip and tell me what it is about' (the Champions League) T 'Which football team was the winner in the Champions League last year?' (Real Madrid) 2 - T 'My favorite football team is Manchester United. I am a big fan of Manchester United. What's your favorite football team?' (T highlights the word - fan- and pre-teaches it.) CCQs: - Do you like Machester United? (yes/no) - So which football team are you a fan of? (answers will vary) 1 - Ss watch and then give the answer. 2 - Ss say what their favorite teams are.

Pre-activity (5-6 minutes) • To prepare Ss for the next and make accessible

Pre-teach vocabulry of the following reading passage. Please see LA T goes through MFP pattern. Note: T reinforces the pronunciation of the (ed) in regular verbs in the past form of the verbs. /d/ in: played /pleɪd/, answered /ˈɑːn.sərd/ /t/ in: booked /bʊkt/, checked /tʃekt/, walked /wɔːkt/, stopped /stɒpt/, ask /ɑːskt/ /ɪd/ in: wanted /wɒntɪd/, need /niːdɪd/, land /ˈlæn.dɪd/

Exposure (13-15 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading

- T projects the first photo of the story on the board. Ss sit in pairs and each pair gets a set of cards of the photos of the story (no sentences attached). Ss try to put the pics in order. (3 mins) T 'Put the pics in order to make a story' - T projects the first sentence of the story on the board under the first pic (A few years ago Manchester United played the Spanish team Deportivo de La Coruna in the Champions League.) and ask Ss to do the same with the rest of the cards and rethink about their first version and reoder it if needed. (6-7 mins) T 'Match the sentences with the pics and prepare your final form of the story.' - T projects the AK on the WB. Ss check. - Ss do HO2 individually and then check in pairs. Next, check AK on the back of HO2. 4-5 minutes

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

1 - T 'In pairs, please underline all the verbs in the simple past tense. You have 1 minute.' 2- T elicits the verbs and writes them on the WB. 3- T elicits pronunciation and corrects any errors by drilling and marking the stress on the WB when needed. Please see LA.

Productive Task(s) (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ss work in groups of 3. Ss put the sentences of the story away and keep the photos in the correct order of the story. Ss try to recall the original version of the story and rewrite it. - T 'Please work in groups of 3 and try to remember the story and write it again. You have 10 minutes'. T monitors - T 'please exchange your story with another group and check if there are any mistakes.' 3-4 minutes. - T 'Now check with the original story again.' 1 minute

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

T provides clarifiaction for any possible mistakes and errors in the past simple. DEC - T writes some good sentences produced by the Ss during the productive stage on the WB and praises them. - T writes the sentences with mistakes on the WB and asks Ss to correct them. T provides help when needed.
