Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the life of a spaceman/ astronaut in space, his studies and hobbies. This task will be done through a listening / receptive skill in which students will have to listen three time to the tape. Listening for gist, a specific information and for detail. Students will also share their opinions about space and what they would do if they got the chance to work as astronaut for one day (post listening activity / Productive skill).

Materials

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson, students will have practiced their listening for gist, specific information and for detail to respond to the task that will be given to them about the life of a spaceman named Soichi.

Subsidiary Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have learned different things about space and life of spacemen and they will be able to personalize the topic and talk about it as they are spacemen as well as using the vocabulary that was learnt while practicing a productive skill/ Speaking.

Procedure

Lead -in & prediction task (3-5 minutes) • To activate Ss existing knowledge and general interests about the topic

Teacher will use visuals / an image, of the main character from the tape. T will ask Ss to think about who he can be. T will elicit information and ideas from Ss. In this stage, T will try to engage Ss interests in the topic and activate their minds for a pre-teaching vocabulary task.

Pre- teaching vocabulary (5-5 minutes) • To unblock key lexis needed to help Ss understand the tape.

T will give Ss a matching activity to elicit the vocabulary they already know about the topic. After Ss finish, T will clarify MFP of the vocabulary to engage Ss and keep them aware of the context of the listening tape. ICQs: Are you going to match or write the definitions? How many people you will work with? NOTE: T will use more ICQs if needed.

Listening for gist (5-10 minutes) • To encourage Ss to listen for gist/ general understanding

After teaching the vocabulary related to the topic, T will give a HO to set a general idea of the listening context, through the job of Soichi. Ss will listen to the tape, choose the right answer. FB will be as a WC ICQs: Are you listening for all the information about Soichi or just to answer his job?

Listening for specific info (5-10 minutes) • To practice listening for specific information - scanning

In this stage, I will give Ss a HO for a scanning task. Ss this time will listen carefully to fill the gaps with the appropriate words. The task will be done individually first, then Ss will check their answers in pairs. FB will be done as a WC ICQs: Where are you going to find the missing words of the task? How many people you will work ?

Listening for detail (5-10 minutes) • To practice listening for detailed comprehension

Ss in this stage, will have to listen more carefully to answer a detail Qs. T will give Ss the handout to read it first then explain it if needed Ss will answers the task individually, then do a peer checking T will do a WC FB NOTE: Tape will be played more than once if needed ICQs: How are you going to listen this time ? Are you working with someone/ what are you going to do ?

Speaking task (5-10 minutes) • To allow an opportunity to react to the topic, develop oral fluency and personalise the topic

T will ask Ss to sit in a ciircle, imagine they are all a space station crew, and they are in "space" for a mission. In a speaking activity, Ss will talk and express about such experience, and what are the things they would like to do if they were in space. ICQs: Are you going to talk only to your partner or WC ? Are you going to write or talk ?
