Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn about ordinal numbers, their abbreviations and saying dates by using ordinal numbers. The lesson will start with learning the correct order of months. Then, it will be followed by the introduction of the ordinal numbers and their usages concerning dates with the support of listening activities.

Main Aims

  • To provide ss improve their listening skills based on the context of ordinal numbers and dates

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To engage students and set the context of the lesson

T will hang an image of each season and then T will hand out to ss the cut ups on which the names of months are written. Then T will ask ss to match them with each season. The ss will work in pairs and make a peer-check.

Highlighting (6-8 minutes) • To arouse students' attention to the target language

T will highlight the target language by giving ss a guiding task. Ss will distribute a HO to ss. Ss will write the name months according to the correct order, they will write it in pairs. Then they will listen to the recording to check their answers. Then ss will come to board and write the correct order of months. Then ss will go and ask each other about their birthdays, T will elicit the answers from ss.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will start elicit the target language from the ss by asking questions as: How many days are there in a week? How many months are there in a year? Is monday the first day of the week? Is janunary the first month of the year? Then T will write the answers she elicits from ss. Then T will play the recording. T will write the abbreviated numbers in random other and ask ss to put them in correct order. T will provide ss say the other numbers in pairs and monitor them then play the recording and drill if it i necessary. T will start clarifying the form of dates (how to write them and say them orally) within the help of listening activity and enable ss to work in pairs. Then T will drill the ordinals and months .

Controlled Practice (7-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare ss for a meaningful practice

T will hang some cut ups where the dates are written orally and T will hand out some other cut ups to ss on which dates are written. Ss will work in pairs and match the cut ups with each other. Then T will give ss the answer key and whole class will check their answers.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for semi-controlled practice

T will provide ss to focus on the answers as : when is your birthday? What time were you born? T will model for first answer. Ss will ask these questions in groups while T monitor them. Then T will check the correct usage of dates and prepositions.
