Description

In this lesson, students will be introduced to the comparative adjectives and adverbs. Students will consolidate their usage through practising the speaking productive skill and talk about how busy their lives are.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of comparative adjectives and adverbs and the usage of as...as in the context of speaking about the differences between now and the past .

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a discussion in the context of how are lives changed from before.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To set the context: T asks Ss : 'How your life has changed in the last 10 years ?' 'Are you more relaxed now than before or more stressed ?and why ?' -Ss are to think about it and share their ideas with the whole class. -T to elicit adjectives and adverbs: older, quickly, relaxed, fast, harder, worse, better.

Exposure (3-6 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

-T divides Ss into 2 groups. -T to chest the HO. -Ss to answer the fill in the gap exercise to be introduced to target language.(exercise no.1) -ICQs:'How much time do you have?'(2 minutes) 'How many sentences you will write ?' (3 sentences) -In pairs students to practise and read their sentences. -WH discussion.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

-T to chest the HO. -Ss to answer 'Circle the right form or put a tick if both answers are right'.(exercises .2b) -ICQs:'How much time do you have?'(2 minutes) 'How many sentences you will write ?' (6 sentences) -Group check answers. -In two teams, Ss will check the write answers and stick it on the wall. -The first team to answer correctly gets a point.

Language Analysis (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

-T writes the marker sentences : -T clarifies the meaning: to compare between two things. -T clarifies the form: One-syllable words take -er, three or more syllables are preceded by more/less.If adverb ends-ly we use more. 'Life is faster than before' 'People walk more quickly than before'. -T drills the words in the chorus (using back-chaining). 'People are not as fast as they were ten years ago ' 'People are as fast as they were ten years ago'. -T clarifies when to use as + adjective/adverb + as: to make comparisons when the things we are comparing are equal in some way.Or for negative :verb+not+ as + adjective/adverb + as.

Language Practice (2-5 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

-T to chest the HO(Exercise no.3) -Ss to answer 'complete the sentences with the correct comparative form adjective or adverb ' -Ss to check in pairs. -Ss to go on board and write the correct answer. -T to show the answer key and 'give a point to the winner'.

Language practice (4-8 minutes) • Semi-controlled

-T to chest the HO(Exercise no.4) -Ss to answer 'rewrite the sentence so they mean the same .Use as...as ' -Ss to check in pairs. -Ss to go on board and write the correct answer. -T to show the answer key and 'give a point to the winner'.

Language practice extension(If time allows) (4-6 minutes) • Freer practise

Ss to write three sentences about : Talk about how your life changed in the last 10 years. How did it change? Do you have more or less free time now? Why ? What would you like to have time for? -Ss to pair check and discuss. -Then Ss to discuss their answer with the WC.
