Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about holidays in the past.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with clarification review and practice of vocabulary in the context of the topic 'on Holiday'

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will start asking the students when they last were on a holiday. T will tell his last experience. T will hang on the board some personal photographs from his/her past vacations. T will divide the board into 2 parts and T will group the students into two groups. Each group will have three minutes to match the photos with the vocabulary. The vocabulary will be hidden in the classroom.Music will play in the background to make it more amusing and harder for them to concentrate.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage, T will ask them to do the ex.1a on page 64 in pairs. After they are finished, identify each activity, you could ask a couple of learners using an expression with 'go': Do you go swimming? Do you go skiing on a holiday? Open the listening part as an answer key so learners can check their answers. Drill the expressions. Establish that: -the words in A are things you do(you swim, you walk,..) with these things we use go+ing -the words in B are places. With these, we use go to. T will tell them to do ex.1b on the whiteboard. Eliciting from the Ss which ones are places. They will only put the photographs from the warmer activity which are in the category of places on the board. ex.1c will be a speaking activity. T will tell the class what he/she often does on holiday or never does etc. Pair them and let them talk about this. Give them the guided discovery sheet and tell to do it in pairs. Use hot feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will tell the students to look at the pictures on page 64. Elicit the answers and write them on the board.T will discuss with the students what kind of place they are (e.g. big city, very hot). At this point don't ask them what they can do there. ex.2b T: We are going to answer two questions for each picture Which place is it and what did they do there? They will listen to the recording and T will pause after every speaker, and establish where it is and what activities they did. Before this task give them ICQ's: -Are we listening for details? -Are we writing our answer down? They should first check their answers in pairs. After that let them check with the answer key.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In ex.2c they will listen to the recording for specific details. First let them see the sentences on the pager and tell them to makes notes while they are listening. They will scan the recording to find out which sentence belongs to which location. ICQ's. Are we taking notes? Yes. Are we looking for the name of the place? Yes. If T has time he/she will do ex3. the speaking part. Learners choose a photo and say what they did. Their partners will guess.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

If T has the extra time he/she will give them the HO from Practice Book. They will do each exercise in pairs. T won't interfere after they finish WC feedback will be done. T will open five different videos only using their sounds first and let them guess which place or activity it is. They will work in groups for this activity. After the given time three minutes is up groups will discuss their answers.
