Song- Something Stupid.

Description

In this lesson, students learn about vocabulary for describing love relationships through stages of guided discovery. The listening text which is a song will be used as an exposure to the TL. But first, the T starts with a lead-in, then Ss listen to the song along with the purpose to finish a task in which they have to correct the text while listening. Then, T will check their understanding to vocabulary through asking Ss to match words with their definitions. They will follow this up with a discussion about love relationships.

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information, listening practice using a text about love relationships in the context of a song named 'Something Stupid'.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of love relationships words, in the context of red, night, chance, spoil, spend an evening, drop into, despise, lies, come through etc.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T sets the leading by using an activity in which Ss in groups of three will be handed cards A and B with different colors and they will have to match the words with the same sound.The teacher makes sure everyone understands them and sets the time limit. During the activity T will make sure that Ss are doing the task correctly and then asks Ss who have finished first to help other groups and follow this up with a whole class correction orally to check Ss pronunciation to the words. T will make sure at this point to MPF.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T will prepare Ss for the text through a vocabulary task in which Ss will have to match the vocabulary with the right definition individually first and they will have 3 mins to finish. Then they will have to compare their answers with a partner and they have to complete the task in a time limit of 4 mins. After that T will give Ss cards with the right answers. T will have to elicit answers in case the Ss did not understand or the provided definitions were not enough. After that, T will write on the WB the title of the song 'Something Stupid', elicit the meaning of stupid and some guesses about what the song might talk about in pairs then share their ideas with the whole class.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T will focus the Ss attention on the photo and ask them to describe and comment on it very quickly with a partner. Then T will let the Ss listen to the song after they finish listening they have to report the general idea of the song in pairs. T will very quickly encourage whole class discussion.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T will provide Ss with more challenging detailed task in which they have to fill the gaps from the listening. Therefore, the T gives the Ss HO including the lyrics of the songs but with gaps. T asks Ss to listen again and fill the gaps individually with the right word which is one of the words from the first sound matching activity, so T will make sure to draw Ss attention to that. Then Ss will have to compare their answers with a partner. As for the answers, T will give the Ss the full lyrics of the song and they have to check their answers. Later on, T will ask Ss to listen and sing the song all together which will help them practice their pronunciation.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will give Ss cards with expressions and definitions and Ss in groups of three will have to find an equivalent meaning in the text and in a form of a competition the first group to finish the task will be the winner, T will make sure to set time limit and provide Ss with the right answers. After that, the T will Ss to discuss in pairs, Why do they think saying "I love you " is stupid? and Why do you think people are afraid to say "I love you"?and then WC discussion in which T will try to encourage Ss to participate and share their opinion or report their friends opinion.
