Description

In this lesson Ss will learn and practise crime vocabulary through practising reading as a receptive skill. Ss will first have an idea about the topic of the lesson by looking at a court picture. T will try to teach Ss some crime vocabs that may be new for them. T will give Ss the reading text that includes six news stories. Ss will first gist the text to have an overall idea about its content. Then match every news story with the appropriate headline.T will ask Ss to read aagain the text to guess the meaning of some highlighted phrases. T will ask Ss to use the highlighted phrases to gap fill and complete some sentences. In the last practice T will ask every S to write a news story of a crime and share it with the Ss of the class.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a court picture. Ss look at the picture. T and Ss discuss.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T teaches Ss some words that are related to the crime topic. T uses some pictures and gives demonstrations for the blocking vocabulary. T provides Ss with the form of the words. T highlights the pronunciation features (stress and vowel sounds) and drill the words

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T ask Ss to read for gist the news stories to have an idea about each story. T asks Ss to match the news stories with the appropriate given headings. Ss compare their answers with their partners. T provides Ss with the answer key. T asks Ss to check their answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

T asks Ss to read again the text to guess the meaning of some highlighted phrases within the reading context. T elicits the meaning of the words. T discusses the meaning of the words with Ss. Ss have a gap fill activity. They will use the highlighted words to complete five given sentences. Ss compare and discuss their answers with their partners. T provides Ss with the answer key and ask them to check their answers. T give Ss another gap fiil activity and ask them to use some words from the text to complete three nws stories. T provides Ss with the answer key and ask them to check their answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T asks every S to write a news story of a crime. Ss work individually to do the task. Ss share their news stories. Ss stick their news stories on a news paper
