Description

In this lesson, students learn and practice definite, indefinite and zero articles in the context of describing cities. It starts with scanning a short text for information. Then students identify the uses of definite, indefinite and zero articles through a list of controlled and less controlled practice. The lesson ends with a quiz on using definite, indefinite and zero articles.

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Ignacio of Mexico City in the context of Travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Showing pictures of Mexican culture

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students are given handouts of a short text to scan for specific information (looking for answers to 3 question).

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Elicit how to use Definite, Indefinite and zero articles as the text shows - Write students answers on board - Use Concept Checking Questions

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Students are given a drill on page 46 to consolidate rules. - Ss check in pairs/groups

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Class competition: Ss are divided into TWO groups. a member of each group is responsible for arranging a set of cards that contain nouns in Definite, Indefinite and zero articles table. - Teacher checks and gives feedback

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Thumb Ball Game: Ss circle and use a ball that has different nouns to pass among themselves. When a student catches the ball, he/she reads the word under his right thumb using proper Definite, Indefinite and zero articles. Also, students should use the noun in meaningful sentences before passing the ball to another member.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

- Students are given a list of questions to prepare full answers in writing before practicing asking each other in pairs. - Once done, students are encouraged to pair with different students and practice more. But this time, they should think of one more question to add.
