TP3 Reading for Specific Information
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson students are going to practice speaking using the vocabulary of transport, based on a reading text about world travel. First I will use pictures to set the context of means of transport.Students use vocabulary labels to match the pictures. Demonstrate how to categorize the vocabulary from fast to slow. Make sure students know it's by+ name of transport no article. Elicit some examples from the students. Students are asked to read quickly to find some numbers in the text. Get quick feedback. Students read for details because they have to speculate which number would be most appropriate. Students check their answers in pairs. In the next exercise students are asked to cross out the wrong answer. Then, in pairs, they tell each other what they chose and why.

Procedure

Stage 1 (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students some pictures of means of transport and give them the flash cards. ask them to but the correct flash card on the right picture.

Stage 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Demonstrate how to categorise the vocabulary from fast to slow. Using sets of vocabulary cards let students work in groups to put the words in order. Then students compare their answers as groups.

Stage 3 (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Provide examples to the students using by+ name of transport. make sure that they know how to use the structure with different means of transport except with 'on foot'.allow students to work in pairs. Choose examples from their work to be written on the board.

Stage 4 (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Before students start the detailed reading. give them a gist reading task. Ask them to find some numbers after a quick reading. Now demonstrate what are they going to do . Give them time to read and guess the answers.

Stage 5 (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students cross out the wrong answers after the teacher demonstration.Then they can find the answers in the text.

Stage 6 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In pairs students tell each other what they chose and why.
