Description

In this lesson, the students will perform reading. They will have at the beginning a lead in using pictures of transportation and elicit from them the vocabulary. This followed vocabulary matching with the pictures to check understanding. Followed by gist reading; the students will be asked to search for the given passage for numbers and underline them. Then detailed reading; they will put the numbers in the right place in the passage. At the end of the lesson, the students will perform a speaking task about the transposition facts in their country

Main Aims

  • To practice reading for specific information and detail in the context of transport.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice controlled speaking using the vocabulary of transport.

Procedure

stage 1 (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

lead-in Put some pictures that include different machines. Then ask the students What machines do they use the most? What are the machines that they can't live without? give them time to think. Ask them to discuss in pairs.

Stage 2 (5-7 minutes) • To pre-teach the vocabulary

give the students flash cards and ask them to match the words with the right pictures by sticking it to the wall to check the meaning of the vocabulary they might know. pre-teach the following words: tram /træm/ scooter /ˈskuː.t̬ɚ/ ferry /ˈfer.i/

Stage 3 (5-10 minutes) • To practice the vocabulary

Give the students sets of picture labels including transport vocabulary and ask them in groups or pairs to arrange them from fast to slow. ask them to check the others groups arrangement and ask them about their opinion. Quick whole class feedback. ask the students, how do you come to the class every day? try to elicit: by+ name of transport ask the students to work in pairs to answer ex3 in the studens' book

Stage 4 (2-4 minutes) • To practise gist reading

show on the board a list of numbers and ask the students to find them in the passage in 50 seconds. give the students two example and ask them to do the rest. check that the students well understood the instructions clearly by using ICQs questions.

Stage 5 (10-15 minutes) • to practise reading for specific information and detail

ask the students that they need to read the passage carefully to complete the missing numbers from the list on the board it is important to inform the students not to panic they are only guessing. Demonstrate ex.5 Then ask the students to choose the right answer. then they can find the answers in the text.

stage 6 (10-12 minutes) • To practise controlled speaking using the vocabulary of transport

pre-teach the word queue queue /kjuː/ demonstrate what the students are going to do in this activity by giving them one or two examples they tell each other in pairs what they choose and why. ' i think number 5 is false because.....'
