"can" for ability and possibility

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about "can" for ability and possibility in the context of Hong Kong.The lesson starts with eliciting some ideas of what they can do when they have to wait for a long time somewhere. This is followed by eliciting the sentences with "can" and "can't". Finally there uncontrolled practice through asking each other about s town or a city they know

Materials

Abc projector, hand-outs, cards,whiteboard

Main Aims

  • To practice can for possibility and ability in the context of Hong Kong

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Hong Kong

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show ss some pictures about Hong Kong and ask the ss what they can do while they are waiting somewhere

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

ss will read the passage for gist and see if their ideas were the same.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

ss come up with sentences that have "can" and sentences with "can't".

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will elicit a question with "can. Drill it carefully, using the correct intonation and pronunciation then write it on the board, showing the two possible answers.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for free practice

Ss will listen to someone talking about things you can and can't do in Hong Kong.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

ss work in pairs and ask each other about a twon or a city they know using the ideas in exercise 2.
