In this lesson Ss will learn about Model verbs 'must /should ' for obligation and 'Can ' for permission by guided discovery based on a person's talk about the advantages and disadvantages of working from home.The lesson starts with a questionnaires to talk about the ways of working then a gist task about Des O'Brein's talk then talk about the meaning form pronunciation about the target language. Finally there is some controlled practice through gap-fills ect activities and free practice through asking SS about the advantages and disadvantages of working from home.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of model verbs: Must ,Should, Have to and Can in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of work


Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show them the picture from the SB and have them talk about it. right after that I will give them a set of questions about job and ask each other to get information about work.Give them 3 minutes to talk.

lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To provide the context to expose target language.

The Ss will hear a talk about Des O'Brein . 2.10 from the SB and have them gist task to talk about what is the listening about within pairs.

Test #1 (7-9 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

The Ss will do an underlining exercise on the HO(from the SB Des's Talk )give them 2 mins to do on their own and use an ICQ check "How many minutes do you have ?" "DO you fill in the gaps or what?" " Do you do it with your pair or on your own?" I'm going to stick some slips of sentences in which the model verbs are used on the wall of the class and get them find the mistakes if there are about the sentences given and get them discuss with their pair within 3 minutes.

Teach (12-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

I will as SS to remember what Des said about urgent/not urgent and important/not important things.In this stage I will modify the table leave space down to the table so that Ss can write down their own information then get them do the gap-fill in exercise 1. I will give the answer key at the back of the HO . I will try CCQs like ' Do they express advice/obligation?permission?' ' Do model verbs need any other auxiliary verbs like do/does?' etc. I'm going to talk about the similarity and differences between these groups Must and Have to /Must and Should /Mustn't and Don't have to. After that have Ss write their own sentences with these modals and then share with each other.In the process of monitoring checking their pronunciation is also the key and address the PRON. I'll talk about the form of TL by using tables or shapes

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

I'm going to have Ss do exercise 3. from the SB on their own and pair check within 2 mins. The Ss will Play an activity called taboo within the group. First split them A and B group and from each group one student should describe a place not using words given the other S from the group try to guess what this is within 4 mins. I will have them do completion from the WB UNit 6 exercise 3 a,b within 3 mins.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

the SS will think about a job they like most on their own but cannot mention the name of the job and write down a list of advantages and disadvantages for having this job.. Then Ss swap with other pair read the list and guess what the topic is. FB.
