Grammar Lesson
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will learn and practice "used to" in the context of past memories. They do this by having a mini-reading task followed by quick practices of the target language. They will also learn about the difference between "used to" and "would" when they are used to talk about repeated actions and habits in the past.

Materials

Abc textbook copy
Abc find someone who...handout
Abc handout
Abc answer key handout
Abc guided discovery handout

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of "used to" and "would" in the context of past memories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about "memories of food" in the context of past memories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start the session with asking Ss to talk about the foods that they eat now but they didn't eat before or the ones they don't eat now but ate before.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language(used to/habit in the past) through memories of food

I will give Ss the handout of the textbook and make them guess what they are going to read about by looking at the title. I will then ask them to skim the text and check in pairs if they have the same information.I will have vocabulary clarification in case students do not know the meaning of them.I will ask Ss to read the sentences a-j in Ex.2 and find the sentences with the same meaning in the text. I will project the answer key for Ss

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will give Ss the "Guided Discovery" handouts so that they can discover the grammar rules in pairs.I will write the marker sentence from the "Guided Discovery" handout on the board and tell them that they can use "would" alternatively.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will write the highlighted sentence on the board and clarify it (MFP) and ask Ss to find one sentence with "would" in the text and I will write it on the board as another marker sentence and clarify the difference between the two(eliciting). Ss may not know the difference between state and action verbs.I will give them some examples for each.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more free practice

Ss will be asked to pair up and do exercises on the handout by looking at the table on page 45. I will project the answers so that Ss can check whether their answers are correct or not. Ss will do the Ex.3 following by FB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

I will give Ss a semi-controlled practice, "Find someone who..." handouts and ask them to mingle around and find out who in the class used to have some of the habits written on the paper. This will be followed by a free practice task in the next stage.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language "used to"and "would"

I will divide the students into two groups. I will tell half of the class that they became a famous TV star a year ago. The other half are reporters.Reporters prepare questions to ask the winners about how their lives have changed since winning and the winners think of possible answers.Pairs will conduct an interview. If I can reserve time, I will ask them to write a report together.
