Main Aims

  • To motivate Ss to speak using a variety of interactive activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach Ss additional functional phrases aiding them to complete the activities with a better understanding

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T introduces himself to the class - T asks the Ss how they are feeling today - T walks around the class complementing Ss choice of clothing, accessories, etc. - T states that he likes to shop sometimes (when he has money!) - T elicits from students if they enjoy (or like) to shop - T leads into the Warmer activity

Warmer/Picture Difference Task in Teams (9-10 minutes) • To generate interest in the theme of the lesson and introduce key vocabulary

- T makes sure that the class is set up properly (open space) - T asks a student to come to the front (demonstrate activity first) - T gives him/her a paper with the object/picture - T starts the demonstration - T thanks S and has him/her sit down - T tells class that they will have approximately 10 minutes to do the activity - T assigns Ss a number (1 or 2) - T says "You will not tell the other person what the object is you must describe it" - T asks "What are we doing? How much time do you have?" - T says "If you are done switch papers with the person next to you" - T monitors and notes vocabulary knowledge

Preparing To Speak (7-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to prepare for the speaking task and to generate ideas to speak about

- T wraps up the warmer and settles class - T says "Now you will work alone" - T says "You will do number 1 and 2; first match and then add words" - T says "You have eight minutes to work on this." - T asks "What are we doing?" - T asks "Are you working in pairs? Or alone?" - T says "Check your answer in pairs when you are finished" - Write number two (1a) on the board - T says "What were your answers for number two?" - Do a WCFB

Useful Language (5-7 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- T writes on the board the following words: - Sale, Too Much, Up, and Down - T elicits meaning for the following: - "When something is too much, do we buy it?" - "Do we buy it when it is on sale?" - "Can we ask for a sale?" - T writes on the board: "How much is this plate?" - T asks Ss to pronounce /this/ "How much are these cups?" - T asks Ss to pronounce /these/ - Drill the pronunciation of this/these - T does a WCFB

Productive Task #1 Role Play (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- T will assign Ss (A) or (B) - T tells Ss "Both (A) and (B) will have a price guide with the handout" - T tells Ss "You have 30 liras" - "Student A will buy: a T-shirt, a bag, a pair of jeans and one other thing" - Student A has five minutes to complete and then switch - What are we doing for this activity? - How much time do you have? - Now practice

Productive Task #2 Re-order Words (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity for students to practice speaking and forming questions

- T arranges the Ss into groups of 4-5 - T says "You have here some words" - T says "Arrange the words to ask and answer questions" - T says "You have 8 minutes" - T asks "What are we doing?" - T asks "How much time do you have?" - T asks "Are you working in groups?" - T instructs groups to read out their Question and Answer

Feedback and Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- T asks Ss "What was difficult about the activities?" - T waits to elicit answer from Ss - T says "Let's go over the last activity." - T writes on the board: "How much is this plate?" A: It's 35 euros "How much are these cups?" A: They're 10 euros each. - T asks Ss individually "Do you understand?" - T says "Let's go over.....(select Ss preference for error correction"
