Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, Ss will learn about nouns and quantity expressions through guided discovery based on a listening text about chocolate form the previous lesson. The lesson starts with a test to see what problems the Ss have. This is followed by some controlled and freer practices. Finally, Ss recheck the test to see if they were correct.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To clarify and provide controlled and freer practices of nouns and quantity expressions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide freer practice of the main aim through speaking

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks Ss what they talked about in the previous lesson and some follow-up questions.

Test #1 (5-6 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Ss do ex. 3 on page 135 form New Indside Out individually. T monitors to check what mistakes they make. T holds a peice of paper and takes notes. No FB at this stage.

Teach (28-30 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

- Ss look at the audio transcript form the previous lesson - track 2.01, TB page 44 - and underline all the bits with chocolate (chunks of language/collocations). 2 minutes ------- - T asks Ss what they notice about the chunks (quantity expressios). 2 minutes ------- - In pairs, Ss do ex. 2 on page 41 form New Indside Out to focus Ss attention on countable and uncountable nouns. T gives FB (beers, cakes, coffees, salads, whiskies, yoghurts) T shows pics of two or more of each item in one picture to clarify. 3-4 minutes ------ - Ss do ex. 1 on page 41 form New Inside Out individually, and then they check and discuss in pairs as FB. Then T gets some examples form the Ss. 3 minutes ------ - More clarification: expressions of quantity. - T writes the following sentences from the audio transcript 'A little chocolate each day is good for your health.' 'It also contains several minerals and some protein.' on the board and ask CCQs (Please see LA for more details), and then T draws a wide arrow on the boad and devides it into 3 categories (countable, both, uncountable) and writes the quantity expressions on the board. Ss should decide where to put the words in the arrow. Please see LA for more details. (7-8 minutes) ------ --- Controlled practice: - Ss do the first part of ex. 3 on page 41 individually (3 minutes), and then they check with a partner (1 minute).T is monitoring before getting FB on problomatic ones. - Ss do the second part of ex. 3 on page 41. Ss underline the answers to make them true for themselves (1 minute) and then they ask and answer the questions in pairs. (2 minutes) ------- --- Freer practice: Ex. 5 page 135 SB. Modify the exercise to make 3 true sentences and 5 fales ones and then cut the sentences into strips. - T devides the Ss into 2 groups and has two sets of strips of paper with 8 sentences - 3 ture and 5 fales. Each team chooses a runner to get one strip at a time and the group decide if the sentence is true or fales and then tick the true ones and correct the fales ones. T checks each strip after it's returned to make sure it's answered correctly. The team who finish all of them first win. (5 minutes)

Test #2 (5-6 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Ss check to see if they were correct. 3 minutes WCFB. 2-3 minutes

Free practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

If time allows: See page 138 of TB, do Game 5 and follow the procedure.
