Description

In this lesson students will learn the vocabulary of some places, how to answer questions with "where" and the difference between there is \ there are. I will start the lesson with an activity about places pointing to the questions, where is ...?\ where are...? Ss will listen to a conversation then, write one. Ss will learn to describe their street or area or a famous place in the city. we will finish the lesson with an activity using There is \ there are.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T draws one girl and one boy on the WB T plays the audio track of people having converstions about places Ss listen T write under each person: Where is he? Where is she? Ss answer: Cafe, station T asks one of Ss to come and write the answers. WCFB

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T shows Ss four pictures, then hands them with the box of vocabulary from the materials. T asks: "Where can you find these things?" CCQs: "Where can you see cars?" picture A "Write cars here" T instruct: "Work alone, write the number of the picture next to the word. You have 2 minutes" ICQs: "Are you working with your friend?" No. ALONE! Ss check the answers in pairs: "Now check the answers with your friend" T walks around monitoring. WCFB

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T shows Ss colorful cards each one includes one item from the previous activity (singular and plural). T asks Ss to read the cards he is holding, Ss read. T checks and drills pronunciation.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T divides Ss to groups, hands them a picture he draw before the class. T asks Ss, "Look at this picture and tell your friends what you see." T asks again: "Now tell me what you see." T writs the answers on WB: Stars Moon Superhero Using different color T adds (There is \ There are ) to the words and let Ss read them. There are Stars There is a moon There is a superhero T uses the finger contractions and let Ss make the changes on WB. T hands activity 2b from pg.22, asks Ss to make the sentences. They work in pairs. "Add there is or There are to make the sentence. Work with you friend. You have 2 minutes" T does the first sentence as an example. ICQs: "Are you working alone?" No, with my friend" T monitor, then WCFB

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shows materials to Ss, ex.1 pg.14, "Now look at these two photos of two places, write in the gaps there is or there are. Work alone, you have 2 minutes" T reads the example to make it clear. ICQs: "Are you writing about these photos?" "How many minutes do you have?" Ss checks in pairs. T monitor. WCFB T moves on to ex.3 pg.14: "Now look at this map, you will read the sentences here and find the place on the map." T continuous by reading the first sentence: " We're at the Olympia Restaurant. It's in New Street, near the cinema." T continuous: "So, where is New street?".... Ss point "Where is the cinema?"...... Ss point Where is Olympia Restaurant?"...... A. T praises Ss: "Good job. Now do it with your friend. You have 2 minutes." T monitor. WCFB.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T shows Ss a picture of an empty city. explains: "This is an empty city. you will put here some buildings to make it beautiful" T shows a paper, explains: "Follow the steps to help you make the city" T reads the first step: "e.g. Cinema is near the big park. So, where is the park?... Where is the cinema?... So, you will post the cinema here." T continuous: "You will make this city with your group and you have 4 minutes." T monitor and check mistakes. WCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T asks Ss to write about their favorite place in Istanbul, "Now I am in Istanbul for vacation. I want to visit good and beautiful places. Where can I go and why?. Please write for me some ideas." T continuous: "write alone, you have 5 minutes." T monitor to check errors. When they finish T gets all the papers from the Ss and select some of them to read in the classroom. WCFB T thanks Ss
