Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about a festival in the context of celebrations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of festival-related vocabulary in the context of celebrations and help students to write a similar summary.

Procedure

Warmer (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T brings some pictures about Running of the Bulls to have them discuss within pairs and lead them the reading about a festival in Spain.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T designs a simple gist task to have SS find the answer for what the reading is about. To elicit more information from them T shows some pictures about the festival to help them to talk more about the gist reading section. After the gist SS must face their text handouts down.

Pre-Teaching vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To facilitate SS to do the tasks afterwards.

T brings some slips of key vocabulary with the definitions and also show some pictures to have instant FB.

While-Reading#1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

T splits the whole text into slips of 7 paragraphs and stick all 6 questions on the board. To do this activity split the Class into A and B groups. Give each group 7 slips of passages and encourage them to find information for the questions and get them to discuss within their own group.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with a bit challenging deduction and inference reading tasks

T will have them sequence the passages in correct order after they discuss their answers within the group. Now T can allow Ss to face the Text Handout up to check their own answers and get FB. Get Ss cover the reading text and move on to the vocabulary exercise 1., Ss complete and check in pairs; then T helps them with unknown words here and also have PF.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T will get Ss to read the text again for useful language and vocabulary that they can for a little summary of their own. T could do a model here of a celebration at the Running of the Bulls (St. Fermin's Festival). Then Ss in pairs write their own little summary about a festival in Turkey but DO NOT write the name of this celebration. Once they finish they swap with another pair who reads the description and guesses the festival. some correction and content FB.
