Subsidiary Aims

  • To help students produce the newly learned language in a meaningful context

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To help Ss share their opinions on the order of the story To increase curiosity on the context

Ss will be provided by some pictures related to the story. They are to put the pictures in the order they think the story happened in PW and asked to justify their order. After eliciting what the story is about, some students are asked to share their opinions related to the story.

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To introduce key-lexis to facilitate Ss' comprehension of the text.

Some key words are underlined in the text. Ss are given a HO to match the words to their meanings individually. T elicits the matching activity.

T divides the class into team A and team B. T explains Ss will do jigsaw reading. Team A reads the first half of the text whereas Team B reads the other half of the text. Ss are to read and answer some questions related to the part of the text missing in PW. At the end of exchange of information, T projects the whole text for Ss to check their answers.

Controlled Practices (6-8 minutes) • To help students practice a reading skill called "Reading for details"

After Ss' jigsaw reading, They are given a HO containing a T/F/NM activity and comprehension questions. They are supposed to complete the activities individually.
