TP2 - Grammar: Future Verb Forms
Upper-Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, the learners study five future verb forms in the context of travel plan and arrangements by listening a conversation of two friends. Basically it is meant to teach students grammar while, at the same time, enabling them to discern future sentence structures' meaning, form and pronunciation differences. By being exposed to auditory and written forms in various exercises, the usage of the grammar is clarified. With additional controlled and semi-controlled practices, acquisition of the knowledge is maintained gradually.

Materials

Main Aims

  • The instructor's main aim is to provide clarification and practice of future verb forms in the context of travel arrangements in the future.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The learners are exposed to the grammar through auditory and written forms

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The instructor tries to frame the gist of the text which is related to the conversation on travel plan. To achieve this, she shows pictures of the two friends and the place they'll meet in. By doing so, images aid to set context in the learners' minds. Then she poses three questions covering general ideas that forms the listening text.

Highlighting (3-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The students are supported to raise their awareness about the grammar usages of the future verb forms in the listening text. In case, the learners lose the track of a large part of the listening part e.g. in the previous lesson, the sts are given the transcript of the text. So, they can follow listening better ( if it is needed to replay the dialogue) and check the answers. In pairs, students answer gap-fill exercise, then in groups of four they check the final answers.

Clarification (12-14 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In group work students match name of the future verb forms with their definitions. That way, the relation of the meanings with the various verb forms is clarified. For example, future verb form 'will' is matched with the definition: 'a decision that is made at the time of speaking.' The sentences from the listening text is combined with the future verb form names in pair work. To clarify meaning: For present continiuous, students may think that the events are happening at the moment. Then I’ll ask CCQs. (We're staying in a small hotel in Padstow for a week.) Are they staying in the hotel now? Are they driving to Cornwall at the moment? Do they still have time to leave their hometown? To clarify form: Comparison of different sentence structures and grammatical components of them will be elicited. To clarify pronunciation, for instance, contraction forms instructor get students do drill and finger exercise.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

A further conversation between Emma and her husband provides a similar context of future arrangements for learners to practice future verbs. Individually learners choose one of the given verb form between two answers. In pairs they compare and discuss their answers. In the last stage instructor gives feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

If there's enough time, students are asked to write individually their future plans and arrangements about their work or study for the autumn by using future verb forms. The instructor gives her examples, check their understanding with ICQs. Then students write their story and in pairs read each other's answers; control their mistakes. Sts share their writings with the class. Then feedback is given.
