Intermediate B2 level

Description

In this lesson students will get to read for gist and inference as well as practice and perhaps learn new phrasal verbs. The lead-in is an active and fun game with TL from the text Ss will be reading later. Reading context will be elicited from Ss based on the lead-in's sentences which will be on the wb. The first reading task will ask Ss to read for gist and some inference and later Ss will decide what kind of story it was that they read. Then Ss get to reminiscence about their childhood adventures and discuss with a partner. In order to work through some of the phrasal verbs, Ss will re-receive the same text, but with alterations, all phrasal verbs have been replaced with verbs and are asked to match meaning of phrasal verbs. The set they've created will be used to write a story from a storyboard which will be given to students next.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and inference reading practice using a text about an adventure story in the context of childhood memories and adventures.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of a common set of phrasal verbs in the context of childhood memories and adventures.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will play a game called the telephone game, also called the Chinese whisper. Class will be divided in two groups and students will line up next to each other in two rows. First member will read a sentence offered by teacher and whisper the sentence to the next student and so on until the last member writes it on the board. The team with the least mistakes wins

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

After all 4 sentences are written on the board and corrected, students will be asked if they can gather from what they see what the sentences could be about.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be given Reading 1, a prepared text and are asked to read for gist, what kind of story is this? After they're finished and offer their opinion on the type of story they think it is, they'll be asked to discuss w/partner what kind of adventures did they get into as a child. Partner will report about what they hear.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will receive Reading 2, the same text with the difference in form, almost all the phrasal verbs are replaced with verbs. Students will be put in pairs and are asked to read and find all the phrasal verbs they can and pair them with the verbs from the latter reading and make a list with phrasal verbs and their meaning according to the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will receive a HO of a storyboard and empty text lines next to each drawing. They'll be put in groups and will be asked to use the phrasal verbs from the list they made and write an adventure inspired from what they see. The stories will be put up so that others can read them and we'll vote the best story!
