Description

In this lesson students will learn about basic vocabulary for family and work. The approach will be to use text-based presentation of language and to clarify pronouns. Students will be lead using guided-discovery model and learn by example while incorporating their own ideas about family and work.

  • Clarification of grammar for she/he and her/his and presenting "they are"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- Introduce myself to class - Ask how everyone is doing - Show a picture of my brother, myself and my dad - Write my family tree on the whiteboard - Ask the class what the picture represents, and have them guess - Elicit answers and lead-in to the context of family

Pre-teach (8-10 minutes) • To practise reading and writing target language

- Family tree exercise handout - Ask Ss to complete the family tree - Check work in pairs

Listening/Reading Task (5-8 minutes) • To practice listening key vocabulary for gist and specific information

- Handout a picture of a family - Have the class listen to recording 1,30 - Instruct the class to match the words to the picture - Ask for feedback and check answers as WC -

Highlighting Target Language (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language for learner focus

- Write on the board: This is Omar and his/her family. This is Emma and his/her family. - Elicit from students which answer is correct - Circle correct answer - WCFB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

- Write sentence form on the board: "My family" "His family" "Her family" - Next, write "This is" before the written words on the board. - Erase "This is" and change to "They're"/"They are" - Drill the sentence form for a few minutes - Elicit students to ask questions - Move on to the next activity - Next is a matching activity, get them in pairs and match the sentences to the pictures. - WCFB

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

- Place students in groups - Explain activity and tell them fill in the blanks - Handout the fill in the blanks - Give students 5 minutes - Each member of group will stick their answer on the matching pictures - Ask each student to pronounce as they match their answers

Language Check (4-5 minutes) • To practice reading and speaking

- Hand out last activity - Give instructions to look at the top section only - Practice speech - WCFB
