Main Aims

  • To practise functional language for talking about people indirectly

Subsidiary Aims

  • To listen to a conversation to guess the meaning of the phrases from contextual clues.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Teacher hands out a worksheet showing a picture and statements. Teacher tells them to think about what they see in the picture and elicit some guesses for the unkonwn words. Then, tell them that they are going to listen a dialogue.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The teacher asks students to be careful with the intonation and word stress while listening and ask them follow the dialogue from the hand outs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The teacher asks students to pay attention of the highlighted phrases as they are the examples of indirect meaning sentences.
