Description

In this lesson, students practice skimming and detailed reading through a text about famous failed marriages. They also practice topic-related vocabulary, which is followed by a discussion session to provide a freer speaking practice.

Main Aims

  • To give sts practice in reading for specific information in the context of an article about famous failed marriages.

  • To review lexis related to relationships.
  • To give sts freer speaking practice through a discussion.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (8-10 minutes) • To set the context and prepare students for the lesson

Teacher does a demo of the activity with one of the students. T hands out small pieces of paper to students and asks them to write down the name of a well-known Hollywood celebrity on it. Sts pin it on the back of their friends. Sts walk around the room, asking three questions to guess their celebrity. The first student to guess wins. Anticipated ICQs: How many questions will you ask? What will you do after three question?

Pre-Reading (4-6 minutes) • To familiarize students with the celebrities they will read about

T hangs pictures of the celebrities in the text and ask students what they know about them. Sts do the exercise #1 (p16).

Pre-Reading #2 (2-4 minutes) • To clarify blocking vocabulary for a smooth reading session

T clarifies some of the vocabulary that may block the reading session.

Gist Reading (4-6 minutes) • To quickly go through the text and prepare student for more challenging exercises

Sts quickly read the text (1 minute) and do the exercise # 2 (p16) in pairs. WCFB

Detailed Reading (10-15 minutes) • To do a more challenging reading practice

Sts read the text in detail and do the ex. #3 (p16) individually. They check the answers in pairs. WCFB

Lexis Activity (8-10 minutes) • To introduce vocabulary related to relationships

Sts do the lexis exercise #1 (p17) individually, using the text. They check the answers in pairs. WCFB Anticipated CCQs: -Do you split up with your boyfriend/girlfriend if s/he asks someone out? -Can people have children at the age of ten? -You don't like a man/woman. Do you ask him/her out? -Can a woman with children have a career? Why? -Do couples with children should have a stormy relationship?

Post-Reading Activity (8-10 minutes) • To give students freer speaking practice through discussion and provide them with a chance to use the new vocabulary

In groups, sts discuss whether they agree with the statements in ex. #1. WCFB
