Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of language used for acquaintance in the context of meeting people

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversations in the context of meeting people

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context of formal and informal meetings and engage students

Show 2 pictures to students and try to elicit formal/informal. Give them tips with letters. Ask: What do you see in the picture? What style is it? (Sport shoes, classic shoes, work suit, casual, everyday) (meeting at work, meeting with friends). What can be Formal/Informal? ( talks, letters, messages) If I say, "Hey, bro!" or "Dear Mr James". Is it formal or informal I divide them into 2 groups. Give them phrases. The first group will choose formal phrases, the second will choose informal. Then they have to put it on the board.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening

Pre-listening. p.14. Students look at the pictures and answer where it is and if the situation is formal or informal. Listening ex.1 Students match conversations to the pictures and say which conversations are formal and which ones are informal. (Play it only once. Have them check in partners before you do very quick feedback with the whole class.)

Language focus (7-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Focus on Functional Language: Language focus: ex. 1 put each word on a small piece of paper, give a set to each pair, have them put the sentences together) Feedback with an answer key or the phrases on the board

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Language focus: ex 2, Students have to complete the table with phrases from exercise 1. Peer-checking. Whole class discussion. Students read in turn all phrases. Clarifying pronunciation. Language focus: ex.3. Students work in pairs. Quick check.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and encourage students use the target language.

Speaking: Give each S a small piece of paper with a name, surname and a job Have them go around introducing themselves to each other with their new identity. [[Note: script the dialogue on the board and possibly model it with a strong student when you set up the task. Continue the task with dialogue #2, more informal. Dialogue 1 -Hello! My name is .. -I am a... -Hello! My name is -I am a... -Nice to meet you. -Nice to meet you. Dialogue 2 -Hi, -How's it going? -Fine, thanks. How are you? -I'm ok, thanks

Delayed error correction (2-4 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' using of the target language.

Collect some errors and do delayed correction on the board after the task
