Description

At the end of the lesson, my class will be able to scan texts and develop comprehension skills.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Mexico City in the context of traffic

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Mexico City in the context of commotion and traffic

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce myself. Remind Sts of the topic of the previous lesson and ask them to share their feelings about Istanbul. Set the aims of the lesson clearly.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show pictures of Mexico City and play the Mariachi song and ask them to discuss it in pairs. And get them to share everything they know about Mexico. Brainstorm ideas and thoughts.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Remind Students of the vocabulary for feelings and opinions from the lesson before mine. Tell some of the meaning of the words. Ask them to quickly scan and highlight examples of the vocabulary and make a note of what that adjective describes.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Get Sts to do ex.a making brief notes while they read. Sts then summarise the text with a partner using their notes for guidance.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Put Sts into small groups to discuss ex.b. Select Sts to share their experiences in WC feedback
