Description

In this lesson, students will practise greeting each other in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic (ECA), in addition to asking and answering questions about their names.

Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in greetings in the context of getting to know each other

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Let all Ss stand in a circle. Hold a ball and say your name, then throw it to someone. Let them throw it back saying their names. Do it till all SS have said their names. Now, take the ball and say the name of the one you are throwing to. Model and let them do it. Repeat several times till they nearly know all the names. At this stage, give no instructions. Just model

Exposure (11-12 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Start by saying: masaa il-khier مساء الخير Ask SS to repeat after you: masaa il-khier. Drill. Show an arrow for a reply: masaa in-nour مساء النور Drill Make sure they pronounce the words correctly. Show them different pictures of the sun from 12 pm till midnight. CCQs: Masaa il-khier - 7.00 am? La'a Masaa il-khier - 1.00 pm? Aywa Masaa il-khier - 7.00 pm? Aywa Now use: sabah il-khier صباح الخير Ask SS to repeat after you: sabah il-khier. Drill. Show an arrow for a reply: sabah in-nour صباح النور Drill Make sure they pronounce the words correctly. Show them different pictures of the sun from 12 am till noon. CCQs: sabah il-khier - 5.00 pm? La'a sabah il-khier - 10.00 pm? La'a sabah il-khier - 7.00 am? Aywa Say: Ana Ahmed = ismi Ahmed. أنا أحمد = اسمي أحمد Drill. Let SS repeat "ismi Ahmed" and "ana Ahmed". Now personalise: "Ana Ahmed". Let each one say his/her name that way. Ask: enta ismak eh? إنتَ اسمَك إيه؟ Answer: ana ismi Ahmed. Drill: inta ismak eh? / inti ismik eh? Rebuild dialogue: - masaa il-khier - masaa in-nour - ana ismi ... / inti ismik eh? - ana ismi ... Add: Ahlan wasahlan أهلًا وسهلًا Drill.

Clarification (4-5 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Hold different flashcards and let SS say what is said in that situation: Sun: sabah il-khier Afternoon: masaa il-khier After midnight: sabah il-khier Drill several times. Demo with a SS: مساء الخير مساء النور أنا إسمي... إنتي إسمك إيه؟ أنا إسمي... أهلًا وسهلًا أهلًا وسهلًا In open pairs, SS ask each other to make that dialogue.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Divide SS into pairs using coloured strips of paper. Each pair should make a whole dialogue. If they finish quickly, they can change pairs.
