Description

In this lesson students will get to practice and learn about phrasal verbs while working in groups. Students will have several tasks which will help them to clarify the meaning of some phrasal verbs as well as learn new ones. The lesson will begin with a fun warmer, where students get to play a game. This will set up the lesson and allow us to move on to the next task, where I'll show different activities in photos and students will try to call out the phrasal verb needed to describe the activity. After some minor corrections and a short teaching on form and meaning, students will again try out creating different phrasal verbs as part of the next task.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of a common set of phrasal verbs in the context of everyday activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a description of general activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be divided into two groups and will play tic-tac-toe on the board by matching given verbs and preposition and creating a meaningful sentence. For each correct answer their team gets an O or an X.

Test #1 (10-15 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

A display of photos of people in a type of action which can be described by using phrasal verbs has been prepared and students will look at the pictures and call out the type of action they're seeing. Hopefully, students are able to call out most of phrasal verbs targeted today.

Teach (3-5 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The meaning, use and form of phrasal verbs will be given to students and in most cases will be elicited, if possible. Separable and inseparable phrasal verbs situations will be given as well.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Class will be divided in 3 groups and each group will receive 3 phrasal verbs. 1 of the phrasal verbs is active and has more than 4 verb-preposition combination and the other 2 are less so. Students will be asked to find the most verb-preposition combinations they can and then we'll check for meaning and write sentences.

Free practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In case there is time left, students will find the opposites of the phrasal verbs they've come up with.
