Description

In this lesson, Ss will practice using 'be going to' to talk about Future predictions within the context of 'fortune telling'. The lesson will start with a lead-in in which T. will ask Ss work in pairs to think of 3 different ways of predicting the future. The lesson will then focus on a reading text about palm reading that Ss will work on and answer a few reading questions. T. will highlight the language used in the text and will help Ss practice it. Finally, the lesson will end with a controlled and a free speaking activities which will be followed by DEC.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Fortune telling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed reading practice using a text about What is written in your palm? in the context of Fortune telling

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will start by asking Ss to work in pairs to discuss 3 different ways of talking about the future that they know. T. will then get FB from Ss and ask questions like: - What are the other ways of predicting the future? - Did you go to anyone to tell you about your future before? -What did he/she tell you? - Did it come true? - What is the the name of the person who tells you about your future? - What are the things he/she usually talk about? Students: Ss discuss the picture in pairs and then answer T.'s questions.

Exposure: Preparing for Speaking (7-8 minutes) • To provide a text to familiarize Ss of palm reading and how it is done.

T. provides Ss. with a text to read on palm reading and answer a few questions. This is to familiarize them of the this way of telling fortune and and how it will be done. This will help them during speaking when they read each others' palms. - T. finally provides Ss with the answer key Students: Read the text, answer the questions and finally check their answers using the answer key provided by the teacher.

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Teacher: T. highlights some of the expressions and sentences by making them in bold in the text e.g. Can I see the fortune teller, please?, Can you read my palm, please?, Hmm, I can see your life line is long and thick, this means that you are going to have a long, healthy life; Good! And how about my relationships, Mr. Rob?, etc. This language will help Ss practice the conversation in the controlled and practice stages by that are to follow. T. helps Ss with highlighted language through practicing the role play and modelling and drilling. This can happen between in pairs, in groups and between T. and the whole class.

Productive Task(s) (15-17 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher: - T. will ask Ss to practice speaking the conversation in pairs. - Some Ss will be A and the others will be B. - A will be the fortune teller and B will be the one who wants to know about their future. Both will practice the conversation together and will refer back to the text about palm reading to get the right information. Students: Ss will take turns practicing the conversation in a mingling activity.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-15 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher: T. will use the notes he has taken while the Ss were speaking to highlight the mistakes Ss have been making on the WB.
