Description

In this lesson, students practice a productive skill (speaking). They will be using vocabulary which they have learned from previous lessons which is related to positive results and achievements. The early stages of the lesson to raise their interest and prepare them for the main speaking activity in the context of Future Plans using "be going to" as well as the opportunity to learn new vocabulary related to the context.

  • To provide clarification of New Year's resolutions in the context of Future Plans

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students, activate schemata, generate interest in the topic and theme of the lesson

1. Lead-in & Warmer Speaking Activity • Greetings • Exposure and personalization and demonstration by example: I will share my plan for next year, I will say I am going to travel next year. Then I will give them the below task. • Task: I will display pictures of people on the wall, ask the Ss to stand up and go around in pairs and discuss and guess what do they want to do in the future? • Feedback technique: I will nominate Ss to share what they think those people are going to do in the future.

Preparing to Speak (5-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to prepare for the task, to generate/provide ideas to speak about the coming speaking task, to provide an opportunity to organize their ideas logically and take notes

2. Preparing to speak A. Task 1 • Alone, think about and 3 things you want to do this summer. • Then discuss them with your friend. B. ICQs: • Are you going to think alone or in pairs? • Are you going to think about 1 thing only? C. Feedback technique • I will nominate some Ss to nominate each other and ask each other publicly about their summer plans.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To provide, highlight and clarify useful language which learners may find useful for completeing the coming speaking task

A. Vocabulary meaning: Task 2 - match the words game in pairs • Quit smoking • Get fit • Give up something • Lose weight • Pass university exam B. ICQs: • Are you going to work in pairs or alone? • Feedback technique is students from each group to write the answer on the WB C. Pronunciation • Find the stressed words in pairs: • ICQ: are you going to find the weak sound or stressed word? • Feedback technique is students from each group to write the answer on the WB D. Form (grammar components to be broken down) • in pairs, discuss the correct grammar components: • Feedback technique is students from each group to write the answer on the WB and then other groups to be asked if they agree to the answer or not.

Productive Task (Speaking Task) (8-12 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice their target productive skill

PW/GW Task: Speaking Task A. Task 3 – regroup and circulate around • In pairs, Think of 5 things you want to do next year. • Then give your sheet to another partner and then ask each other, why did you choose it? And how do you want to do it? • Students to share and discuss three of their new year’s resolutions of 2018 in pairs and then change the person by circulating around a circle of another group. • And how are you going to achieve it? • Your colleague advises you on how to do it. B. ICQ • Are you going to work alone or in pairs? • Are you going to think of 5 things for now or next year? C. Feedback technique: • I will nominate Ss to share with all of the class what they heard about the persons they talked to.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will provide a delayed error correction regarding sentences or words or questions I hear during the speaking activity which I recorded while I was monitoring them. Ss will be asked to try and think in pairs to fix those mistakes on the WB and will be asked for justification behind their answers.
