Materials

Abc HO1
Abc Audio
Abc HO2

Main Aims

  • To provide specific information and detailed listening practice using a text about Felix' freefall from the space in the context of life stories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking in the context of ss child dreams and a quote by Felix.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows a picture and asks "How do you feel when you see this picture?" Are you afraid of heights? Can you jump from a plane?

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T gives students a HO to pre-teach some vocabulary. Ask ss to match them with the pictures. Pair check. WCFB. Ask CCQs to check meaning: Where do we live? Do we live in space? (on Earth) In Oludeniz people jump from a hill and fly what is that? (parachuting) I try to eat 50 hamburgers in 5 mins. I want to break ...? (a record) I jump into the space without parachute. I just fall and fall. ?? (freefall) It's too fast when a jet flies ?? (sound barrier) What is the part of a spaceship? (capsule) Drill. Show stress. Then watch a short video about the man about whose life we are going to listen. Feedback on content. Did you hear the sound while he was falling? Was it fast? etc Write 25000 on the WB and ask them how they read it because they will hear a lot of figures. It will help those who don't remember how to read them.

Listening for gist • Sts will have a general idea about the audio.

Ask them to listen and see if his dreams came true. WCFB. Any other ideas?

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Give HO. Students choose one of the two options while listening.Give them some time to read the questions before listening. Pair check. Answer key. Do you have any questions? Is everything okay? If necessary, help them or re-play it.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask ss to answer the questions in the second part while listening. Ask them to read the questions before they start listening. Pair check. Is there a problem? Re-play if necessary. Give some CCQs about questions: What did he do when he was a child? Did he break records? How many?etc

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Project two questions on the board. Ask them to discuss in pairs. WCFB. Questions on content. Is the world smaller than we think? Did you realise your dreams? Monitor and take notes for the delayed feedback. This time write a correct sentence and ask if it is correct or not:)
