Main Aims

  • To provide scan, detailed and deduction reading practice considering a text about facts and opinions in the context of writing reports.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of language used for differentiating between facts and opinions in the context of writin


Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Discuss purpose of reports and how the audience affects the style.

Pre-Reading (15 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Hand out sheets and ask students to place the sequence of reports in order. WC to confirm

While-Reading (15 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students to read Reading 1 and in pairs, highlight what they both agree and both disagree with.

While-Reading #2 (20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ask students, as recipients of the report, to evaluate information. Is it informative? Is it mostly from a personal perspective? Pairs to complete Q1 on Pg 68 (1-11) WC to confirm.

Post-Reading (10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

On WB, draw up two columns - phrases used for recommendations vs opinions eg. advise vs feel
