Description

To provide clarification and practice the students will learn Causatives. The lesson starts with fill in the gaps with the verbs in past participle form, followed by finding mistakes in given Causative sentences. Then it will be continued with rewriting the sentences using the word given and the causatives. Finally there some controlled practice and freer activities through completing and making sentences.

Main Aims

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T welcome the Ss. Students are given questions and work on their own. They complete the questions with the past participle of the verbs in the box. Then the Ss. compare their answers with their partners. T. elicit the answers from the Ss. and write them on the board.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

T explains that we use the causative to talk about an action that you ask someone else to do for you. I have my car washed every Friday. (=She pays someone to wash her car.) T shows the form of the sentences. I have my car washed every Friday. S verb object past participle. T gives another example. I had my car washed last week. S verb object past participle I am having my car washed right now. S verb object past participle I have my car washed. S verb object past participle

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T writes a sentence on the board. She has her hair cut. T asks; Does she cut her hair by herself?-No. T elicits the answer. Who do you think cut her hair? T elicits the answer. Ss. give the answer. T writes a sentence on the board. He is having the TV mended. T asks; Is he mending the TV by himself? -No. T elicits the answer. My mom has her house cleaned. T asks; Who do you think has done this action? -My mom T elicits the answer. I had my car fixed. T asks; Do you think I fixed my car? -No Who do you think fixed my car? T elicits the answers. T asks; Can we say that all these actions are done by me? -No Ss. answer. T shows their forms by underlining these sentences and show subject, verb, object and past participle of the verbs. T asks; Which tense is it by showing each of the sentences and elicits the answers. T repeats each of these sentences and drill. T asks Ss. where the stress in this sentence is and elicits the answer and shows the stress in the sentences. She has her hair cut. He is having the TV mended. My mom has her house cleaned. I had my car fixed.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives a handout Ss. Ss work on their own and correct the mistakes in five of the sentences. After doing the sentences, Ss check their answers with their partner and share with whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T gives sentences to Ss. Ss. rewrite the sentences using the words given and causative and discuss which person in the box the sentences in the exercise. T reminds them that they must keep to the meaning of the original sentence. Ss. have 5 mins and work with their partners. After working they come to the board and write their answers.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives a handout Ss as a Freer activity. Ss will see some places and they will make sentences using causative. e.g Hairdresser: I had my hair cut in hairdresser. Shoe repairs: I have my shoes repaired in shoe repairs. They have 5 mins. Next, they will compare their own sentences with their partners. Finally they will share with whole class.
