Description

In this lesson students learn about the superlative adjectives through Guided Discovery based on a Superlative Quiz about different places in the world within the context of ‘The most dangerous road’. The lesson starts with two short video clips: one about Dubai Tower, being the tallest building in the world; and the other about Bolivia road, being the most dangerous road in the world. This is followed by a Superlative Quiz which will contextualize and introduce the TL. Ss will work on the text of the quiz to work on different activities to discover the rule of using superlatives. Finally, there is some controlled practice, which will be followed by a freer one to help Ss practice the TL in a fluency speaking activity.

Procedure

Lead-in/Building Context (3-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the context of the lesson

Teacher: T. plalys two short video clips: one about Dubai Tower (the tallest building in the world) and the other one about Bolivia Road of death (the most dangerous road in the world). T. asks Ss to watch the two videos and discuss them in pairs, and finally gets FB from them. Students: Ss will watch the videos, discuss them in pairs, and provide T. with FB.

Exposure: (5-6 minutes) • To provide Ss with a text that contextualizes and introduces the TL (Quiz)

Teacher: T. gives Ss a Quiz about different places in the world to work on quickly and then check their answers with their partners within their groups. T. then provides Ss with FB. Scripted instructions: - This is a short quiz about some places. - Choose the correct answer, please. - Check with your partner after you finish. ICQs: Will answer the quiz alone or with your group? What will yo do next? Off you go. Students: will answer the quiz alone, check in pairs then provide T. with FB.

Highlight Target Language (3-5 minutes) • To highlight the TL so that Learners are focused on it

Teacher: - T. asks Ss. different questions to focus on the TL in the previous quiz. T. What did you notice about these sentences? All of these sentences have ____________ . (T. elicits 'adjectives' from Ss and asks them to underline all the adjectives in all the sentences of the Quiz)

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form, and pronunciation of the TL.

Teacher: - T. then gives Ss a HO and asks them to word cooperatively to answer the questions in this HO. These are the guided discovery questions. Finally, T. provides Ss with FB. - At this stage T. needs to monitor carefully and provide help only when needed. Students: Ss work in cooperatively in groups to answer the Guided Discovery questions and then provides FB to T.

If-time activity: Controlled Practice with form (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher: While Ss are seated in groups, T. provides each group with two different sets of adjectives in the superlative form and asks them to stick them on the class walls under the right formation rule which will be given in another set to each group. T. will ask Ss from each group to check the work of the other(s). T. will then provide Final FB. Students: Ss work on the task, check each others' work and then

Controlled practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher: - T. divides Ss into two groups A and B and provides each one in each group with their activity (A or B). - T asks Ss to fill in the blanks with the correct form of the superlative adjective. - T asks Ss As to check together and Ss Bs to check together. and finally provides final FB. Students: Ss will work on the controlled practice, check with others and get final FB from the teacher.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher: T. extends the last activity into a more communicative one. T. asks As to ask all the questions to Bs and provide them with the right answer when they make a mistake. Then Bs do the same. - During this stage T. should monitor and take notes for the DEC.
