This lesson will be about types of houses. Ss will learn lexis about parts of a house/flat, prepositions and phrases. Then they will practice the lexis orally focused on using the target language accurately and fluently.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice the parts of a house/flat in the context of where people live. To present the TL (MFP) before providing controlled and freer practice. At the end of the class students will be learnt new lexis about part of a house/flat and how to describe it. Then they will be provided controlled and freer oral activity in which the learners use the TL productively and with a communicative and, with more fluent use of the TL encouraged.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in describing the pictures about parts of a house/flat in the context of where people live.


Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic/theme/global context of the lesson.

Give each S a marker and get them write down things/pieces of furniture, etc. for each room.

Building Context (5-8 minutes) • To narrow the context to a more specific area and continue to generate interest while establishing a clear and a specific context for the language to arise out of.

Put Ss in two groups and get them match the parts of a house/flat on the board. Then play the audio for Ss to check answers.

Presentation (15-18 minutes) • To clarify meaning so learners understand it. To clarify the pronunciation so learners know how to say it. To clarify form so that learners know how to construt it.

Present the 14 lexis which are about parts of a house/flat that Ss matched beforehand. MPF: Clarify the meaning, pronunciation and form respectively. Focus on ''Describing a House or Flat'' part and get Ss to talk about the pictures in pairs. Get them match the description and photos in pairs. Then focus on how the highlighted phrases are pronounced. Focus on the 8 phrases on the slide. Make them show you where they are then clarify the meanings. Focus on the ''Chimney or Fireplace'' and ''Roof or Ceiling?'' Go through it with students. Focus on ''Where People Live?'' and get Ss to do the activity individually. Make sure they write in the PREPOSITION column and not in the sentences. Then play the audio for Ss to check answers. Give practice pronounce, modelling and drilling. Finally focus on ''Suburbs or Outskirts?'' Ask Ss what they think about those words. Stick the following phrases on the board: (a suburb of) - (on the outskirts of) Check if they remember the prepositions of each phrase.

Practice (10 minutes) • To provide controlled oral practice focused on using the TL accurately.

Put Ss in pairs and get them to discuss the difference between the words. Give Ss each questions so that they will talk about different topics.

Production (10 minutes) • To provide freer oral practice and focused on using the TL more fluently.

Put Ss in 2 groups and mix them. Get them discuss the questions altogether.
