Description

In this lesson students will learn all about talent and becoming famous. They will read a text from a successful British talent show and find about their winners.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading for students to look at the text about the topic of talent, based on popular British television show the X Factor.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency in speaking and vocabulary in the context of talent.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T shows very short video clip of one of the X Factor winners. - T asks ss what they think the video was about. - Briefly pre - teach some vocab: talent, career, auditioned - T explains this is a talent show. - T asks ss do you have a talent? (playing an instrument, artist, singer) - something for them to think about over the course of the lesson.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-T tells ss to skim the text for 3 minutes. - In pairs go around the classroom and stick the correct sentences onto the correct singers paper. - T monitors - T takes WCFB

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- T tells ss to look at the next set of questions and explains they have to answer them either true or false. - Teacher tells ss to look at the text again, but this time read it for longer. - T tells ss to work in pairs. - T tells ss to peer check with their partner. - T asks for WCFB by asking all the ss whether they thought it was T or F. - T asks ss why they thought it's T or F.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

- This time ss will be given the text but sentences will be missing from the paragraphs. - In groups ss match the sentences to the correct paragraph. - T monitors and corrects anything if any confusion arises. - T tells Ss they can check with another group to see if they have the same answers. - T gets answers from the Ss and asks why they chose this answer. - T provides the answer key on the board. - The next task is ss have comprehension questions from the text. - Ss work in pairs and answer the questions. - T monitors. - T asks ss for their answers and why they chose these answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- T asks the ss to remain in their groups. - T explains they will have a discussion/debate about talent. - T asks ss to think about these questions: Do you have the X Factor? What do you think your talent is? Would you like to be famous? Do you think these talent shows are a good idea? - T monitors while the ss talk. - T gets some FB from ss about their thoughts and opinions. - Error correction.
