Description

In this lesson students are going to learn about the future tense and when to use "going to" and when to use "will" in the context of having plans and making arrangments in the future.

  • To provide gist and specific information in the context of plans and decisions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and prepare them to the language lesson that will be covered .

The teacher will ask the students to talk to each other in pairs for 2 minutes "what are their plans for the afternoon" Then she will ask each person to talk about their partner's plans and arrangements for the afternoon.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text and a listening task

The teacher will write on the board, What do James and Richard discuss? What do they decide? Then the teacher will ask the students to listen to the recording to answer the questions on the board. after they listen to it the first time they will have two minutes to discuss in pairs what they heard and answer the questions together. ICQ: Do you have to write anything? NO ICQ: Do you discuss the questions in groups or pairs? In Pairs The teacher will give them a handout with the script of the listening, they will listen to the recording one more time and this time they have to circle the correct answer.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

The teacher will write on the board few examples from the script of the listening the students just circled the right answers from. 1. I'm going to take my nephew Sam to his first football match. 2. I will tell her it's something really important 3. It starts at five. The teacher will elicit from the students what tense is used in these sentences and if they know the difference between the different examples on the boards. The teacher will give them the answer key to check their answers in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the future tense

The teacher will write on the board the 4 questions from the analysis and ask which two are used to ask people about their plans for Saturday afternoon. The teacher will ask what is the difference between the two questions. The teacher will write on the board the two sentences from Question (2) from the analysis and ask which express an old idea and which expresses a new idea?The teacher will elicit from the students the difference in meaning between "I will " and "I'm going to" The teacher will also elicit from the students when can present simple be used to express something that is going to happen in the future. and refer to sentences d,f, m from the dialogue. The teacher will write on the board "I'm sure she'll understand" and elicit from the students that it is used for prediction and ask them to find another example from the dialogue.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for the language they were introduced to in class

Students will have 5 minutes to fill in the blanks with the correct future form of the verbs in the brackets (Individually). from New Cutting Edge student's book p. 109. ICQ: Do you work alone or in pairs? ALONE ICQ: How many minutes do you have? 5 minutes. After they are done they will check their answers in pairs and then the teacher will give them answer keys.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

students will have 3 minutes to think about the 1 topic given to them and to think which future form is correct for it in pairs. They then change pairs to talk to each other about their plans and arrangments. The teacher will be monitoring closely to make sure they are using the correct form and meaning for their plans. Then the teacher will ask the students if they heard anything interesting from their peers. The teacher will do some delayed error correction with the whole class if needed.
