Description

In this lesson, students learn lexical set about school and university subjects. The lesson starts with a question about school/university to set an appropriate context, then students will be exposed to the target language and asked to relate the school/university to a table divided into three parts, Following that, students will practice the target language through controlled and free practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher projects two pictures with two questions below them. both the pictures and questions are related to the context as they will reflect students' opinion about school/university. this stage is going to be teacher-student centered where he describes the reason he loves/hates school/university for few seconds, then asks SS for their opinion. The SS will interact with the question depending on their own knowledge.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

the teacher presents the task on Power point presentation projected on OHP. The task will be three statements: "I know" "I'm not sure "I don't know". Each statement is followed by a big circle. SS will be given small HOs sheets each individually. each sheet has a name of a subject related to school/university. SS will come to the board and stick the subjects beside the suitable statement according to their knowledge. music will be played during this exercise.

Teach (13-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

In the pre-teach procedure, the T checks the students' answers. if some subjects are unfamiliar to some SS, whilst others know the meaning, the teacher asks SS to explain to the meaning of the subject using their speaking skills. The teacher follows up to elicit the meaning of the unknown words from the students: (suggested unfamiliar words) Performing Arts: I use my body to act drama, to dance. people watch me singing or acting or dancing on stage or on TV when I finish university, I can be famous later. Science: I study about DNA, I practice experiments on rabbits and monkies, I put different liquids together to try new things. Medicine: I study about the human body, about the organs, heart - brain - skin and so on. Law: I study to help people if they have problems in their life with money or other people, I study about the rules of my country. Information technology: I study about computers, software, hardware, they call it "IT" also. Literature: I study about famous writers or authors, I read lots of books and I write a lot. I study about Shakespeare for example. Economics: I study about money, about banks, about sell and buy, about wall street. Math: I study about numbers, to be a math teacher. Following elicitation, Teacher checks students' understanding of the words using concept check questions: (some suggested CCQs) performing arts: Do I learn about countries and people? NO. Do I learn about some famous artists? Yes. Science: Do I learn about mechanic and cars? No. Do I learn about people and animals? Yes Medicine: Do I learn about bacteria and germs? Yes. Do I learn about atmosphere and weather? NO. Law: Do I learn about nature and animals? NO. Do I learn about government and what I can/Can't do? Yes Information Technology: Do I learn about business? No. Do I learn about programs and networks? Yes Literature: Do I learn about space and planets? No. Do I learn something formal or informal? Formal Economics: Do I learn about business and Wallstreet? Yes. Do I learn about health? No. Following the Elicitation and Checking understanding for each word, The teacher model the pronunciation and drills from SS, then record it on board and mark the stressed place.

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Individually, SS will practice the target language by doing an exercise provided on HOs sheets that have list names of the subjects with pictures on the other side related to the words. SS will match each subject with its true picture. In pairs, SS check their answer. Then as WC, FB with the teacher providing the answer key to the task.

Free practice (10-13 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS will personalize the context depending on their own knowledge by practicing speaking for fluency. each SS will have small sheets with several questions. they will ask/answer each other several questions: 1- what is your favorite subject? why? 2- which subject you don't like the most? why? 3- which school did you like more? primary or secondary? why? 4- Is it difficult to go to university in Turkey? if yes, why? SS express their own information and ideas and FB as a whole class with the teacher to check what SS learned about each other.
