Description

In this lesson, students are going to learn high numbers and practise listening in the context of quiz show. The students will then go through a productive stage to practise the language they learned. In the listening stage, they are going to be exposed to models of comparative.

Procedure

Lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To generate interest in the theme of the lesson

T divides the class into two teams. T start the PPT for the programme "Who wants to be a millionaire?" T tosses the coin for a team to start playing the game and answering the questions. When the starting team fail to answer the question the turn goes to the other team. T will ask ss to listen to recording 4.42 and write the right answer for the three questions in the recording. SS say the numbers. FB: SS

pre-teach vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • To pre-teach/ublock key lexis needed to help ss complete the text task

T asks ss to work in pairs and do HO#1 (high numbers). T plays recording 4.43 to check answers. Then play the audio again,pausing for ss to listen ans repeat. Give further practice of any numbers ss find difficult to pronounce. T divides the class into three teams, give each group a copy of HO#2. SS match the definitions with the pictures. SS move to check answers from other groups. T shows the answers on the board and explain any difficult items. FB: SS, answer key

Listening for gist (2-3 minutes) • To encourage ss to listen for gist

T sticks the question in HO#3 on the WB and tells ss that they need to listen to the recording to answer this question. T plays recording 4.45. SS discuss in their groups they then give their answer. FB: SS-T

Listening for specific information (5-6 minutes) • To practise listening for sepecific information (scanning)

T chests HO#4 and explain to the ss that they are going to listen again to the same recording and answer the questions in 2a. T allows two minutes for ss to read the questions. Ss listen to the recording answer the questions then check in pairs. Then check the answer key on the back of the HO. FB: SS, Answer key

Listening for details (5-6 minutes) • To practise listening for detailed comprehension

In pairs ss look at the sentences from Quiz Night. Write True or False. SS. listen to recording 4.46 to check their answers. Ss answer the question " How much does she win?" FB: SS, Recording

Listening for inference (4-5 minutes) • To practise listening for inferred meaning

T divides the class into four groups. SS . listen again for why the answers are true or false. Ss, In their groups, write down any numbers they hear on a piece of paper and stick it on the WB. SS compare their FB. T checks. FB: SS

Speaking - Task (8-9 minutes) • To develop oral/written fluency on the topic

T divides ss into two groups. T tells ss that they are going to test each other. T chests a " Quiz Template" and tells ss to fill the gaps and complete the questions that they are going to use to use to test the other team. T allows 3 mins for that. Ss start the quiz doing it by turn. T monitors for DEC. T runs DEC FB: SS

If-time activity (3-4 minutes) • To povide further oral/written practice on high numbers

T rearranges the groups into two groups. Each ss writes a number on a piece of paper (a card). Ss take it in turn to dictate their numbers to other team. The other team writes the numbers down. Ss show their cards to match and check. The winner team is with the most correct numbers dictated FB: SS
