Procedure

Lead in (3-4 minutes) • To activate students background schemata about leaving school and islands

-T shows pictures of their highschool on OHP and briefly talks about what the did when they left -T shows questions: What did you do after you finished school? Or - What do you want to do when you finish? -Ss discuss for a few minutes -T shows Galapagos map -Shows Ss short video about the island, pausing on iguanas and the end and writes iguana on WB (first check to see if any Ss knows the name of the animal)

Reading and Highlighting (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with a general understanding of the reading context and to highlight the target language

-T gives handout the interview reading, asks Ss to fold the bottom -T tells Ss they have one minute to read and answer gist question alone -Peer check then T quickly checks answer -Ss unfold the bottom of their sheet and complete highlighting exercise -Again peer check then T check

Guided Discovery (15-20 minutes) • For students to work through the handout, clarifying the meaning, form and pronunciation of the TL

-T hands guided discovery sheet, Ss work in pairs -Ss check with other in their pairs then when they finish in groups of four -T does whole class check -T uses timeline for when and how long if clarification is needed -T writes marker sentences on WB: When did you leave school? How long did you stay in Galapagos? -T models pronunciation for students, drills

Controlled and Freer Practice (10-15 minutes) • For students practice using the language, focusing on fluency and accuracy

-T shows when and how long questions on the OHP, Ss complete in pairs and ask each other the questions -T asks Ss to come up to the board and fill in the blanks -T gives students interview handout, demonstrates that in pairs students will take turns asking each other the questions without looking at the reading (one Ss will play Anne, one John then switch) -T will monitor and hot error correct, after exercise nominate students and ask some of the questions -T gives Ss interview sheet and demonstrates that they should go around asking different Ss the questions and filling in the answers -Ss can also write and ask two of their own questions -T monitors and writes down common errors, if time review on WB
