Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students will have understood and used the articles in the context of study about chewing gum and memory.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed in the context of Research about chewing gum and memory.


Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To create interest in the topic

-T will reflect the lead-in picture on the board. T will ask SS to discuss in pairs " what the boy is doing?" SS has 2 minutes to discuss. ICQ: Will you work alone? No Do you have 2 mins? Yes T will get WC FB. T will try to elicit word " chew gum and blow a bubble with a gum."

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

-T will reflect the titles on the board. SS will first read the title then the text quickly to decide the best title on their own within 3 minutes. SS will discuss their answers in pairs. ICQs: Are you working together? No Do you have 4 minutes? No T will get WC FB. T will inform that title 2 is the best.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

-SS will read only part A and underline the articles on the text referring to task 3 on their own. SS have 3 minutes. ICQs: Are you going to write? No Will you work together? No -SS to check answers in pairs. -T will reflect the task 3 on the board to make it clear for SS. SS will come to the board and write their answers. WC FB

Clarification (5-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

-T will reflect analysis 1 task on the board. SS will find examples of articles in part A in pairs within 3 mins. -T will get WC FB

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • SS to remember target language and practice it in limited context.

-T will reflect exercise B on the board. SS to complete exercise B on their own within 3 minutes. ICQs: Will you work alone? Yes Do you have 2 minutes? No SS will pair check their answer. SS will come to the board and write their answer. T will correct any errors if needed.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

-SS will complete a quiz on their own within 5 minutes. ICQs: What are you going to do? Complete the quiz Will you work together? No SS to pair checks their answers. T gets WC FB

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-SS will work in two teams. Team A will look at task A and team B will look at task B and SS will complete the questions with correct articles within 2 minutes. -T will draw a table on the board with Team A in one column and Team B in one column.T will ask Team a to ask the first question if articles are correct team A gets two marks for the correct answer. If the articles are wrong T will elicit the correct answer. Same stages for team B will follow.T will report this procedure until all the questions are finished. ICQs: Will you work together:? Yes Will you complete the questions with correct articles? Yes SS then will write three more questions on their own. SS will take turns to ask and answer the questions. T will do error correction if needed.
