Description

By the end of this lesson, SS will learn and practice forming, asking and answering Wh-questions of the simple past in the context of History makers and facts. After setting the context through visuals and a short quiz about 5 people who have done great things in the past, Students will do a short exercise using the past simple to practice and test their knowledge. SS will also have the opportunity to practice their productive skills by using the target language via different interactive activities.

Main Aims

  • To expose SS to Wh-questions of the past simple tense in the context of history makers

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide SS with controlled and semi-controlled practice to enhance both their fluency and accuracy of Wh-questions in the past.

Procedure

Warmer/ lead-in (5-6 minutes) • To set lesson context of history makers and engage students.

Teacher says: 'Historical places', 'History makers' twice. Teacher invites SS to repeat the two phrases chorally after him twice. Teacher displays two pictures on the WB representing the words: 'Historical places' & 'History makers' T asks students to match them. T then display 5 images of the History Makers with different words aside like explorer/ scientist/ Musician/ President/ Artist. T provides instructions: Do you know these people? Yes You have 1 min to discuss in pairs who they are T allows some time for discussion. T elicits answers from students and find out what SS know about them. T provides instructions to students: You have 2 min to work in group of 3 to complete the quiz. T asks ICQS to make sure students understood the activity. Do you complete the quiz in group of 3? Yes SS share their answers. For the feedback T highlights the use of the past simple language.

Test 1 • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

T will ask students to stand up and make a circle. T will try to elicit from the students what’s between her hands. What is this? It’s a ball. T explains to the students the activity and gives a demo. “You are going to peel the potato and give the simple past of each of the written regular and irregular verb you will find in the paper and pass the ball to your classmate. T then will provide SS with controlled practice HO's SS will have to Gap Fill Handout in the Past simple to test their knowledge about it.
