In this lesson,SS will practice reading and listening skills in the context of holiday.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about hotels in the context of holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about hotels

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-Show pictures of hotels and ask them to ask these questions each other in pairs: When was the last time you stayed in a hotel? Where was the hotel? Did you enjoy staying a this hotel?Why?Why not?

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

-Show them these words with pictures; a rainforest / ə ˈreɪnfɒrɪst / , a shipwreck / ə ˈʃɪprek /, go snorkelling / ɡəʊ ˈsnɔːkəlɪŋ /, go diving / ɡəʊ ˈdaɪvɪŋ /, a guide / ə ɡaɪd /, a suite / ə swiːt /, staff / stɑːf /, room service / ruːm ˈsɜːvɪs / -Ask which ones do they know, and try to elicit the meanings of those words and teach the others with making them guess about them. * -Ask SS to look at the pictures of the text and read the first paragraph. * -Ask SS to work in pairs. -Give them 2 minutes to decide which article the words in the previous activity are in. For example; The rainforest can be in the first article.

While-Reading #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

-Put SS into two groups.Group A and group B. -Group A read about Ariau Amazon Towers; Group B read about Jule's Undersea Lodge.After finishing ask them to look at the other article quickly in 30 seconds. -Give 3 minutes to read and 2 minutes to answers the questions. -Ask SS to answer these questions; What is unusual about the hotel? What facilities are there(restaurants,bars,pools,etc.)? What can you do near the hotel? How many rooms are there? How much does it cost per night? When is a good time to go there? ICQs: Do you have 2 minutes for this? No,5 minutes. Do I want you to work in groups or pairs? Groups Are you going to answers all the questions? Yes -Give them reading texts. * -Put the one S from one group to another. -Ask SS from another group to ask those questions to other group's members and try get idea about that text. -Give 3 minutes ICQs: Are you working alone? No within a group How many minutes do you have for this? -Elicit the answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more detailed reading and listening tasks

-Ask SS to read and listen the text to check other group's answers alone. ICQs: Do I want you to just listen? No, reading at the same time. Do I want you to work in your groups? No,individually. -If they need, re-play the recording. -Elicit the answers and check them as a whole class.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

-Ask SS to work in the pair and answer these questions; Which hotel: is smaller? is more expensive? is more comfortable? has more things to do? is more beautiful? is more unusual? -First change the pairs and ask SS to check their answers then do WC checking. Finally ask SS : Which hotel is better for a holiday? Why? -Elicit their answers and make delayed error correction.
